Saint-Pierre is the capital of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, France's only overseas territory in North America. The town of 5000 sits on a 3 km by 6 km island 25 km off Newfoundland's south coast. The archipelago is an EU outermost region and the only Eurozone member in the Americas. It endured as the last piece of New France after the 1763 Treaty of Paris. The centre holds the 1816 colonial layout around Place du Général de Gaulle and Cathédrale Saint-Pierre while Île aux Marins waits a short boat ride away.
Three reasons. It remains the sole French territory in North America with EU membership, Euro currency, and Schengen-equivalent access. Île aux Marins preserves the 1875-1965 fishing village now maintained as an archaeological site with Maison Archéologique and Cap Bertin. Its position as a Prohibition rum-running base from 1920 to 1933 and Atlantic crossroads between France, Canada, and Newfoundland adds a final layer.
You are the kind if you like layered French heritage in a remote Atlantic setting, short boat rides to former fishing islands, and history that runs from New France through rum running to EU outpost. You are not the kind if you want beaches, big-city pace, or low prices. Expect EU-level costs on an island with limited supply.
June to September. July and August deliver 10 to 20 C days, open services, and the summer atmosphere. Bastille Day on 14 July brings parades and territory-wide events. Avoid October to May when cold and Atlantic storms limit access and close many facilities.
Saint-Pierre Airport (FSP) receives Air Saint-Pierre flights from Montreal, Halifax, and Sydney. The 90-minute ferry from Fortune, Newfoundland, is the most common route and arrives steps from the centre. EU, UK, US, Canadian, and Australian visitors enter visa-free for 90 days.
Centre town, harbour views, 14 to 41 rooms

| Café du Coin | Everyday centre café with baguettes, croissants, coffee, and light meals. |
