Caracas is Venezuela's capital and Caribbean South America's largest city. About 3 million people live in the metropolitan area in a north-south valley at 900 m elevation at the foot of El Ávila National Park, the 2765 m coastal range that separates the city from the Caribbean coast 25 km north. The Spanish founded Santiago de León de Caracas in 1567. Simón Bolívar was born here in 1783 and led independence in 1811. The city became the showcase of the 1970s and 1980s petroleum boom. It has faced economic and political challenges since the 2013 succession from Hugo Chávez to Nicolás Maduro.
There are two ways to read it. As a heritage city: Plaza Bolívar, the Casa Natal del Libertador, the Panteón Nacional. As a launch point: the Teleférico de Caracas, El Ávila National Park, and flights southeast to Canaima and Angel Falls.
Three reasons. The Bolívar heritage centres on the Plaza Bolívar, Casa Natal del Libertador (his birthplace), and Panteón Nacional (his tomb and the national memorial). The El Ávila National Park backdrop delivers the 2135 m Cerro Ávila and the 4 km Teleférico de Caracas cable car that reaches the summit and continues to the Caribbean coast at Macuto. The gateway role to Canaima National Park and Angel Falls (979 m), the world's tallest waterfall, plus the Caribbean coast at La Guaira 25 km north.
You are the kind if you travel with a guide or Venezuelan host, accept the need for preparation around logistics and security, and value the cultural depth in music, Joropo dance, arepa cuisine, and the abrupt shift from valley city to mountain and sea. You are not the kind if you want breezy independent first-time South America travel. Colombia, Argentina or Peru suit that better. Venezuela demands more planning. The minimum proper trip costs around US$80 per person per day.
December to April. This dry-cool window brings 20 to 30 C temperatures, low humidity, and the high tourist season. December, January and February are the sweetest months. Carnaval before Lent and Holy Week mark major festival periods. Avoid May to November when rains arrive with afternoon thunderstorms and tropical storm risk. The city's 900 m elevation keeps temperatures at 18 to 28 C year round while the coast stays 26 to 31 C.
Simón Bolívar International (CCS) sits 25 km north on the Caribbean coast at Maiquetía. The ride to the city takes 45 to 60 minutes by taxi through the El Ávila tunnel (US$30-50). Arrange pickup through your hotel. Direct flights operate from Madrid, Lisbon, Bogotá, Lima, Panama City and Santo Domingo. Limited flights from the US resumed in 2024 and 2025. Metro de Caracas (Lines 1 to 5) works for daytime travel. Pre-book all taxis via hotel or the Yummy app. A driver-guide is advised for first-time visits.
