San Salvador is the capital of El Salvador and its largest city with 1.7 million people in the metro area. It sits at 660 m elevation at the foot of Volcán de San Salvador. The Spanish founded it in 1525. The Centro Histórico holds Plaza Barrios, Catedral Metropolitana, Iglesia El Rosario and the Palacio Nacional. The city serves as base for trips to Joya de Cerén, the Pacific coast at La Libertad and the western routes through coffee towns and volcanoes.
Three reasons. The Joya de Cerén UNESCO site 35 km west preserves a 6th century Maya farming village under volcanic ash, known as the Pompeii of the Americas. The La Libertad surf coast 30 minutes south features Punta Roca, a right point break that hosts World Surf League events. The Ruta de las Flores and volcano line two hours west connects coffee villages such as Juayúa, Ataco and Apaneca with Volcán Santa Ana, Volcán Izalco and Cerro Verde.
You are the kind if you spend one or two days in the capital then move to day trips for archaeological sites, surf villages and coffee routes. You accept the country's 2021 Bitcoin Law and safety changes since 2022. You are not the kind if you prefer long established circuits in Mexico or Costa Rica. This destination suits travelers who want Pacific surf, volcanoes and pre Columbian history in Central America's smallest country.
November to April brings the dry season with temperatures between 24 and 32 C and marks the travel peak. December to March delivers the best conditions and peak Pacific surf. The country lies 13 to 14 degrees north so it stays tropical year round. Avoid May to October when afternoon rains arrive daily.
Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International (SAL) sits 50 km south of the center. An Uber or taxi ride takes 45 to 60 minutes and costs USD 30 to 50. Direct flights arrive from multiple US cities plus connections on Avianca, COPA, American, Delta and United. Most EU, US, UK, Canadian and Australian visitors receive 90 days visa free under the CA 4 agreement that covers El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Use Uber or Bolt inside the city. Hire a driver for any trip beyond San Salvador.
Escalón for upscale and business, Zona Rosa for dining and walkability, Antiguo Cuscatlán for residential quiet
