Castries is the capital of Saint Lucia and sits on Castries Bay with a metropolitan population of around 70,000. The island was founded by the French in 1650, changed hands 14 times between France and Britain, saw emancipation in 1834, and gained independence on February 22 1979. It is the only island with two Nobel laureates: Arthur Lewis for Economics in 1979 and Derek Walcott for Literature in 1992.
The Pitons Management Area lies 40 km south and holds UNESCO status since 2004. English is the official language with Saint Lucian Creole French widely spoken. The Eastern Caribbean dollar is the currency.
Three reasons. The Pitons UNESCO 1161 inscribed in 2004 features the volcanic spires of Gros Piton at 798 m and Petit Piton at 743 m plus the Sulphur Springs. The two Nobel laureates with Derek Walcott Square and its 400 year old saman tree. And the 14 changes of hands between France and Britain that earned the island the name Helen of the West Indies.
You are the kind if you like day trips to volcanic sites and heritage squares, appreciate layered colonial history, and do not mind planning around weather windows. You are not the kind if you want long beach days without movement or low costs. Most visitors base in Soufriere or Rodney Bay and visit Castries on a day trip. The proper daily rate starts at US$250 per person.
December to April brings the dry season with temperatures of 24 to 29 C. January to March offers the most reliable weather. The Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival takes place in December and the Saint Lucia Festival in May. Avoid June to November because of hurricane season.
Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) lies 65 km south with a 1.5 hour transfer to Castries that costs around US$80. George F L Charles Airport (SLU) sits 3 km northeast and serves regional flights. Direct international flights arrive from London, New York, Miami and Toronto on British Airways, American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, Virgin Atlantic, Caribbean Airlines and Air Canada. Most EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian visitors receive visa free entry for 90 days.
Soufriere for Pitons views, Rodney Bay for beaches and nightlife 12 km north, Castries centre for market access
