Oranjestad is the capital of Aruba, a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The metro area holds 35,000 people on the south coast at sea level. Spanish arrival came in 1499, the Dutch took control in 1636, Fort Zoutman rose in 1796, and status aparte began on 1 January 1986. The Aruban florin is fixed at 1.79 to the US dollar, which circulates freely alongside it. Dutch, Papiamento, English and Spanish are all in use.
There are two ways to read it. As a capital: pastel colonial houses, Fort Zoutman and the Willem III Tower, linear park along the water. As an island hub: minutes from Eagle Beach, Palm Beach and the trails of Arikok National Park.
Three reasons. The status aparte of 1986 that set Aruba apart from the former Netherlands Antilles while remaining in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Fort Zoutman complex, the oldest standing building on the island, with its 1868 Willem III Tower that now hosts weekly cultural events. And the concentration of beach and nature: Eagle Beach ranked among the top beaches for years, Arikok National Park protecting 18 percent of the island with its caves and natural pools.
You are the kind if you like wide Caribbean beaches, colonial history in small doses, and dinners that end with local rum. You are not the kind if you want mountains, crowded nightlife or rock-bottom prices. Even a modest visit runs USD 250 per person per day; the full resort and private-island version climbs from there.
April to August brings the driest air and calmest seas. Temperatures sit between 27 and 32 degrees Celsius year round. Aruba lies south of the hurricane belt so September to November remain viable. January and February are slightly warmer but still breezy. Rain is short and rare in any month.
Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA) lies 4 km east of the centre. The taxi ride takes 10 minutes and costs USD 25. Direct flights arrive from Miami, New York, Atlanta, Amsterdam and other hubs on American, Delta, JetBlue, United, KLM and Aruba Airlines. Most EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian visitors enter visa-free for 90 days. Rental cars or hotel shuttles handle onward travel to the beaches and Arikok.
Palm Beach for large resorts, Eagle Beach for boutique, Oranjestad centre for heritage walks
